How do I love dresses?
Let me count the ways.
I love that I can toss one on with no thought or planning. Ta-da, a ready-made outfit.
I love that dresses are breezy and cool but provide more coverage than shorts and more polish than casual capris.
I love that a dress is appropriate for almost any occasion and can be easily dressed up or down with shoes and jewelry.
I love that since I’ve figured out what dress shapes are most flattering on me, I can usually spy the dresses on the rack that will look best.
I love that dresses are feminine and pretty but still modern and practical.
I love that a dress takes up less space in my closet or dresser than pants and a shirt.
I love that a dress – even a higher-end one – often makes for a less-expensive outfit than buying separates.
In fact, I love dresses so much that I’ve decided to make them this summer’s “mom uniform.” For the last few years, while I was still nursing, skirts and tops were my mom uniform, and they were nice, but just not as easy as a dress. Grab and go, what could be less fuss?
And while it’s nice that picking up a sundress from Target isn’t a huge financial investment, I also like having a few dresses in my closet that are a little more special: well-made, with a great cut and eye-catching detail (like my “famous” blue dress.)
So when Shabby Apple asked if they could send me a dress to try out, I jumped at the chance. I’ve been admiring Shabby Apple women’s dresses for a long time – the styles always look very “now” even when they have a vintage flavor, they had a great reputation for being well-made and providing enough coverage to make a mom feel comfortable in them, and, well, they’re pretty. But so far I hadn’t taken the plunge and ordered because I was a little nervous about ordering online.
Of course, since Shabby Apple provided me this dress for free there wasn’t much risk involved, but I was happy to see that they have extensive fitting directions on their website, a guide for shopping according to your body type, and a 30-day satisfaction guaranteed return policy in case it doesn’t work out. (Full disclosure: I’ve signed up to be a Shabby Apple affiliate, so if you click any of the links and make a purchase from Shabby Apple in the 90 days after the original click, I’ll receive a commission for the sale.)
After lengthy and painful deliberation (I wanted them ALL) I chose this fabulous bright-green dress: “Mariposa Grove.”
I was not disappointed. I love the cut (check out that slightly flared skirt at the perfectly flattering knee-grazing length), the knockout color (you don’t often see dresses in a green this vivid) and the detail at the bust, perfect for a smaller-chested woman like myself. The fit was just right, too – tight enough for my rather shrunken post-nursing bust (sigh) with enough room in the hips and waist, though I did notice that the dress fit me quite differently from the photo on the website. I could go up a size to get that fit, but I think a snugger fit is a little more flattering on me (and to be honest, I am hoping to lose an inch or two off my waist this summer which will help it fit a little more loosely!) The green looks a bit lighter in the sun, particularly in the rather washed-out photo at the top, and deeper/more intense inside or in dimmer light, like the photo on the website.
