On embracing my home-design limitations

by Meagan Francis on April 24, 2012

our kitchen: it's still not done, but it's coming along.

Over at Babble today I’m talking about our decision to buy an over-the-range microwave/vent combination, rather than a separate (read: stylish) range hood, and how insecure I felt about that choice until I realized:

This is my house. It’s not a designer’s house. It’s not a studio. It’s not a magazine layout.

So really, who cares what anonymous internet critics think? We have to do what works for us. Our needs, our limitations, our preferences, our budget.

I’d love if you’d read the rest of the post, and then let me know – have you ever felt insecure about a purchase or decorating decision because of what “other people” might think?

We are very fortunate that when we bought our house, the kitchen had (fairly recently) already been remodeled. Would I have made the exact same choices? Probably not, but the choices made were good ones, and the kitchen functions in terms of layout and design–which is more than I can say about the kitchen in our former apartment!

And I’m with you. Our kitchen is not large, and we need to maximize space. That means that the over-the-range microwave stays where it is, even if something else might be prettier–because the alternative is to dedicate some of our limited counter space to the microwave.

My approach to home decorating is, like my overall style, fairly simple: What is the problem? What will solve the problem? What is the most attractive way to solve the problem within our budget? Form follows function–and that’s never kept people from commenting on how “homey” our house is.

Hi Meagan! i love how you arrange your kitchen. You can also create open shelving where you can display your plates and utensils. Good luck with your kitchens!

hi Heidi! Yep, we’re putting open shelving on either side of the microwave. You know…when we get around to it! Thanks for reading!
