mini-resolution: update our family calendar

by Meagan Francis on January 23, 2012

Blue Sky Wall Calendar

With our late winter break followed almost immediately by travel, things have felt a little chaotic around here for the past couple of weeks. I’m still trying to get into the swing of the new year, make sure I know about important upcoming dates, and plan some fun family activities over the coming months too. That means I have to get re-organized after letting things slide during the holiday.

So today, I’m taking out my Blue Sky wall calendar and a brand-new pack of colored pens, and I’m going to whip our schedule into shape. Just taking a few moments to write everything down and organize all our dates in one visually-appealing place always makes me feel calmer, more on top of my life, and more ready to have fun. Is there a simple task you can do today to help make your family life more orderly and less stressful?

Speaking of organization, I’ll be a featured guest at The Motherhood today during a live chat on getting organized. The amazing Asha Dornfest of Parent Hacks is hosting, and the equally-amazing Christine Koh of Boston Mamas will be the other featured guest. If you’re looking for some inspiration and tips for tidying up your home life – or have your own ideas to share – I hope you’ll join us at 1 PM EST/10 AM PST.

I’m halfway through a four-week series of mini-resolutions: small, simple improvements I’m making in different areas of my life. This week I’m focusing on “family”. I hope you’ll join me!

I have discovered and love Google calendars! I have a separate color code for each member of the family and I can access the calendar on the go with my iphone. Making adjustments and adding as it comes up. Then I can print a weekly or monthly view and post it on the fridge, color coded and all to keep everybody straight. Not only that you can embed the code of any particular calendar directly on your blog so people could see when and where and where you are speaking, chatting etc. i highly reccomend it.

I 2nd the Google Calendar. We’ve been using it for years now. For some reason I try to go back to the paper calendar – I don’t know why. Maybe because writing things PHYSICALLY down feel like I’ve accomplished something. BUt I keep reverting back to google. My husband and I both have access to it, which is good thing. he reminds me of dr’s appt i’d like to avoid and i can remind him of stuff too. And it’s great on the iphone. It’s scary how much of my life Google has a hand in . . .

I still use a paper journal and calendar to keep track of things…it really does help me to remember stuff if I actually write it down. Somehow typing it doesn’t work the same! I am still a paper girl.
