My Happiest Place: When I’m Here, I’m Changed

It’s time to feature another reader-submitted #MyHappiestPlace story! This month’s selection comes from reader Kirsetin Morello. So many of you talked about your happiest place being outdoors this past month; we loved the photos of gardens and back decks and patio spaces. Read on for Kirsetin’s beautiful tribute to the happiest place in her home – and find out how you can submit your own!

My Happiest Place by Kirsetin Morello

Every summer morning that I step onto this patio, with my piping hot cup of tea in my sailboat-emblazoned mug, I’m changed.

It’s here that I experience pure joy as I watch the blue jays swoop in and dominate the birdfeeder, cardinals flitting away.

Finding morning joy on the patio may not seem remarkable, but morning is not my time of day. Generally speaking, I prefer the comfort of my own crabby solitude.

This patio changes things. The birds chirp, the cool Northern Michigan air calms, and I find a peace that’s elusive elsewhere.

But it’s not just the mornings.

It’s the simple dinners, with all five of us crammed around the table. Often, it’s grilled burgers and a salad. But as everyone crowds around, passing dishes and telling stories, my heart grows full.

It’s the laughter we share as we roast s’mores, always watching at least two catch fire. More stories are shared, more memories made.

It’s the hours we spend here talking with friends, deepening relationships that draw us ever closer. I can’t tell you the joy this brings me.

This patio is the stuff of life, real life, and it’s the happiest place I know.
